Diablo III was released last night, and if you are interested in its design, I strongly recommend checking out David Sirlin’s article on its ability system. To the outrage of many fans, Blizzard decided to remove many of the key mechanics of the previous game like attribute point attribution and ability trees as they totally revamped the whole progression experience. As a teaser, here is how Sirlin summarizes it:
